Try sandiegoseedcompany.com for a good resource for SoCal urban farmers. Good info and seed source.

I live in coastal Northern California and was excited to hear about growing avocados, so checked with our local nursery and learned that they need warmth, 80 degrees or so, to do well. The very knowledgable and reliable man told me that you really need to grow them in a greenhouse in this kind of climate--cool and windy, even in the summer. And you need two different kinds of trees, A and B, (except for one kind, I think it's the Mexicali) for pollination. It's a little more complicated than the site referenced in your podcast indicates (I spoke to them as well). And another friend who actually grows avocados in SoCal, told me they need a lot of water. So I'll probably forgo avocados but am very excited about getting my garden going. Thanks for the help and inspiration (and the brutal truth about what we are facing that so many others are simply not expressing.) God bless.
